Sea Cliff Manor on the Long Island Sound, where the Gold Coast meets Gatsby
At the turn of the 20th century, Long Island’s North Shore was earning its reputation as the Gold Coast – a sweep of grand mansions, summer retreats, and glittering gatherings above the water. The mansion that is now Sea Cliff Manor, originally known as Sans Souci, was part of that story: a hilltop home overlooking Long Island Sound, built for long sunlit afternoons, cocktails that drifted into evening, and celebrations that still feel a little bit Gatsby today.
From the moment you arrive, the past isn’t something you read about – you feel it in the way the light pours through the windows, in the curve of the rooms, and in the way the terraces and lawns spill toward the Sound.

A seaside village with a story
Long before the mansion stood on the hill, the shoreline below was called Muskeeta Cove. In the late 1800s, Sea Cliff began to transform from quiet coastal land into a cherished summer escape for New Yorkers. Excursion boats and trains brought visitors to the Sea Cliff commuter station; from there they climbed up through winding streets and shady paths to a village of porches, gardens, and verandas.
Boardwalks and pavilions traced the water’s edge, creating spaces for strolls, concerts, and harbor views. Modest cottages sat beside more elaborate homes, all turned toward Hempstead Harbor and the breeze. The historic photos on this page – the busy station, the Rum Point boardwalk around 1900, families gathered by the shore, and Hempstead Harbor circa 1910 – capture the world into which Sans Souci was born.
Sans Souci: a mansion “without a care”
Around the turn of the century, a private mansion rose above the shoreline and was given a French name: Sans Souci, meaning “without a care.” The name suited both the optimism of the era and the way the place was meant to be lived in.
Its architecture reflected the elegance of its time:
- A curving expanse of windows framing the water and changing sky
- A stately stone fireplace anchoring the main room
- Graceful columns and woodwork lending the spaces quiet grandeur
From the beginning, life at Sans Souci moved easily between indoors and out. Guests stepped from parlor to porch, from ballroom to lawn, from the glow of the fire to the dusk over the Sound. It was a mansion designed for generous hosting – music, conversation, and evenings that unfolded without hurry.
From Sans Souci to Sea Cliff Manor
Over the decades, the mansion’s role evolved along with Sea Cliff itself. For a time, the hilltop manor welcomed guests as Sans Souci of Sea Cliff, a French restaurant that became part of local memory for special dinners, proms, and milestone celebrations – another chapter of hospitality woven into its story.
Eventually, the estate took on its present identity as Sea Cliff Manor, a wedding and event venue that preserves the warmth and character of the original mansion while gently adapting it for modern celebrations. Renovations have kept the details people fall in love with:
- The stone fireplace that still glows at the heart of the ballroom
- The soft, neutral palette that lets flowers, fashion, and candlelight shine
- The windows and terraces that keep the Sound always in view
New additions – inviting dressing suites and an intimate speakeasy bar – were designed to feel as though they’ve always belonged here, extending the story rather than rewriting it. The speakeasy, with its leather seating and walls lined with candlelight, offers a tucked-away glow that feels quietly, irresistibly Gatsby.

A Gold Coast spirit, one celebration at a time
Today, Sea Cliff Manor hosts weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs, milestone occasions, and corporate gatherings – always one event at a time, so the mansion and its grounds truly feel like yours.
Ceremonies unfold beneath open sky, with the Sound as a shimmering backdrop. Guests wander from garden paths to waterfront railings, from lawn to terrace as the light softens over Hempstead Harbor. At cocktail hour, the grounds fill with laughter and clinking glasses beneath the trees and string lights. Later, everyone moves inside to the warmth of the ballroom, the glow of the stone fireplace, and the music that brings the night to life – with the speakeasy waiting just beyond for a quieter, candlelit moment.
More than a century after Sans Souci was first built, the essentials remain – the water, the light, the gardens, and a mansion made for gathering. The story continues.
